The 1932 version of A Farewell to Arms owes as much to the shimmering house style of Paramount Pictures as it does the famed novel by Ernest Hemingway. Amid the chaos and suffering of World War I, an American ambulance driver (Gary Cooper) meets an Italian nurse (Helen Hayes). They fall in love and their relationship becomes a metaphor for the power of life and hope over death, succeeding beautifully, right through to the remarkably intense ending. The film received Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Sound, and was nominated for Best Picture and Best Art Direction.
